Green Peas Health Benefits, 7 Healthy Points

Last Updated on December 23rd, 2020
Green Peas is one of my favorite vegetable since childhood. During childhood days, when my mom used to split the covering and get legume out of it, I would always go to her and ask for a hand full of peas. Their sweet taste, crunchiness all was like a perfect candy stuff for me. Not just raw peas taste good, even after being cooked, peas taste awesome. They are a famous vegetable when it comes to preparing dishes because they can be added in many dishes (sandwich, cutlets etc.) just for the taste and crunch and their particular dishes (Matar Paneer my personal favorite) are also famous in many parts of the world.
These peas are not just tasty but they have incomparable nutrients in them also. This leguminous vegetable is rich in health benefiting phyto-nutrients, minerals, vitamins and anti-oxidants. Specifically they are a rich source of dietary fiber, protein, vitamin A including alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, B vitamins – riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, folate and vitamin B6, vitamin K and vitamin C. Apart from these peas also contain all essential minerals and nutrients; though some of them in little quantity, yet worth mentioning – fatty acids, potassium, phosphorous, iron, calcium and very few traces of magnesium, sodium and zinc.

Withstanding all these nutrients, green peas are very beneficial for health. Splitting its covering can give you following health benefits:
1. Maintains Heart Health:
Peas are good in all ways for heart. From reducing blood pressure to checking cholesterol level and preventing conditions of stroke peas alone does it all. The niacin content in peas helps reduce the bad cholesterol levels (LDL), thus improving the ratio of good cholesterol levels (HDL) and soluble fiber ensures the exit of this LDL out of body. Reduction in cholesterol helps reduce the risk of strokes also plus, peas contain phyto-nutrients that reduce blood vessel damage and accumulation of cholesterol in the artery walls. Furthermore, calcium, potassium and magnesium help control the high levels of blood pressure. Thus, all these reasons make peas a must for all the heart patients.
2. Weight Management:
Something that is low in calories and is full of nutrition would be a perfect diet for those who want to lose weight and so are these green peas. With all these nutrients they are very low in calorie content, which means they do not add any extra pounds to the already burdened waist or thighs. Plus, the fiber content makes you feel full, so the urge to eat is less, which also adds to the ongoing weight management program. And when you won’t eat much, the existing calories will burn out leading ultimately to weight loss.

3. Healthy Bones:
When it comes to maintaining healthy bones, green peas does this role very well. The manganese content found in green peas is enough to carry out the synthesis of connective tissue in cartilage and bone, making sure that there are no chances of fracture in connective bones. And magnesium and Vitamin K helps in calcium absorption and bone health, the more the calcium will be absorbed, better would be the strength of bones.
Furthermore, copper content of green peas is active in an enzyme that produces connective tissue proteins, collagen and elastin; thus copper plays an important role in the development and maintenance of bone and joints. So, to conclude we can say that, these green peas make sure that our bones are getting whatever is required for their optimum health.
4. Strengthens Immune System:
Being a rich source of vitamins, antioxidants and other minerals green peas does all it can do to support immune system to work at its optimum. It provides body with the minerals it is running deficient with, plus the vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin B which are found in very good amount in green peas provide that extra hand to immune system.
Vitamin C and vitamin A as an antioxidant fights against the foreign bodies including free radicals that may lead to diseases from as simple as cold and flu to as serious as even cancer. Plus, the iron content found in it helps in production of blood cells which further helps in creating more WBC’s (White Blood Cells). More WBC’s means more immunity against diseases. Thus, green peas act as a shield against diseases.
5. Aids Digestion:
Green Peas are a super hero for your digestive system because they are a good source of both types of fiber; soluble fiber as well as insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber gets mixed up with food and slows down the speed of food, so that body is able to digest food properly. Plus, the insoluble fiber makes sure the proper exit of waste out of body. That means it takes care of constipation by making bowel movement easy. Furthermore, peas also improve your metabolism thereby aiding in better digestion.

6. Skin & Hair Care:
Anything this high in vitamin and mineral content such as these green peas would surely be good for skin and hair. Vitamin B6, folate and vitamin C process free radical damage by which your skin doesn’t lose its collagen and elastin proteins. Thus the skin remains firm, toned, free from diseases and glowing. Similarly for hair care, vitamin B6, B12 and folate helps create the red blood cells which transport oxygen to the cells in scalp. This in turn stimulates the growth of hair and slows the weak hair which are prone to breaking. Plus, as mentioned above vitamin C improves the production of collagen which helps in dryness of hair by keeping them moisturized. Hence make them shinning better than ever.
7. Good during Pregnancy:
Green peas being rich in minerals are really good during pregnancy for both to be mum as well as the unborn baby. The vitamin B content and folate protects the unborn baby against several neural and spinal diseases by helping in the proper growth. The proteins found in good quantity in peas also aids to the health of mother as well as baby, as it makes the process of growth of baby easy and provide the required strength to the mothers in their late months. Iron helps production of blood cells which is again good for both mummy and baby. Plus, the phyto-nutrients also help in growth of baby as well as protects mother from several likely diseases of pregnancy.
Being beneficial to health is a common character of vegetables, but these seven benefits of green peas I think makes them different from any other vegetable. The best part about the green peas is, once you uncover the legumes, you can keep them in an air tight bag in fridge and they can last up to a week.
So, don’t wait and grab a handful of health with these green peas.
