This is because of the bright yellow color of the little lemon, which entirely describes the refreshing nutrients it holds. Lemon is yet again one of the most popular fruit you’ll find and the best part is it could be found in nearly every corner of this world. Not just this, it is also famous throughout the world, firstly it is famous for the lemonade drink (lemon water)– the best and the most preferred refreshment drink, secondly to serve taste to almost 50% of the dishes that are prepared around the world, and third is because of the medicinal values and health benefits it serve. Shocked??
Lemon and medicine?? Yes, since ancient times lemon is serving as a home remedy of viral infection, indigestion, and several skin ailments. All this is because of the high nutritional value of lemon.
Most of the people would be unaware of the fact that lemon is a good source of all the essential nutrients, including vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, riboflavin, calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium. The strange fact you’ll know today about lemons is that lemons contain more potassium than apples or grapes. Lemons also contain traces of pectin fiber and vitamin A.
Most of the people and studies suggest that drinking lemon water as the first thing in morning could do wonders, and yes that is not a myth, this has been scientifically proven that drinking lemon water in the morning has a number of benefits.
This is because it cleanses the track from mouth, to digestive system, till the end of urinary system, lemon water takes with it, all the undigested food, and toxins, reducing the chances of any new disease to develop and making clean space for the new food, so that body could utilize the maximum out of whatever we eat afterwards and makes it easy for the body to digest.
Weather you drink it in morning as the first drink or consume it at any point of time, lemon has a number of benefits to offer:
1. Aids Digestion:
Lemon juice not only encourages healthy digestion by flushing toxins in your digestive tract, it helps to relieve symptoms of indigestion also. Several components in lemon stimulate your liver to produce more bile, the more the bile content is produced, the more easily it breaks the food and speeds up the process of digestion.
Also, lemon assists the digestive system in flushing unwanted materials and toxins out of the body, which are generally the cause of indigestion followed by several problems like stomach ache, heartburn, bloating and burping. Plus, the soluble fiber in lemon, helps the proper bowel movement i.e. all the toxins are flushed out properly. For best results squeeze a lemon in a glass of water and drink it as first thing in morning.
2. Immunity Booster:
The immune system enables to body to stay healthy and fight against the foreign bodies that may be a cause for several diseases. To strengthen the immune system, lemon provides the body with vitamin C which acts as a powerhouse for the immune system and multiplies the body’s ability to tackle diseases like cold, cough and flu, and being one of the richest source of vitamin C, lemon is one of the best immunity booster.
Plus, lemon enhances the body’s ability to absorb iron, an important nutrient for a healthy immune system. Moreover, it also contain certain antioxidants that are useful in boosting immune system. Thus, those people who easily get prone to cold and cough should include lemon in their diet and give their immune system a much required boost.
3. Acne free Glowing Skin:
When it comes to acne, an acne patient would surely do anything to get rid of the shit from the face, but what if I tell you that these little lemon are all you need to fight against acne. Actually lemon contains citric acid, which is most effective remedy in treating acne. The vitamin C found in citrus fruits is vital for that healthy glowing skin while its alkaline nature fights many types of bacteria known to cause acne. So, if you have acne and even if you don’t have it and you want a glowing skin, you can apply it on your face (acne sufferers on affected area) and get a clear skin.
For better results if you will side by side have it in the form of lemonade (a mixture of just lemon and water) it will double the effect as lemon is a natural blood purifier. It removes the toxins out of blood and thus helps keep skin glowing and clear.
4. Prevents Kidney Stones:
Lemons, being citrus are high in citric acid are really helpful for people with kidney stones since it slows the formation of those calcium stones and stops them from clumping together to form bigger ones. The logic behind this is simple, the citric acid doesn’t let calcium to form any tiny crystal, thus the more citric acid in the urine, the more protection you have against forming kidney stones.
The same is provided by pharmacists in their medicines, their medicine increase the level of acid in urine that dissolves the base (calcium in this case) and doesn’t allow any further formation of any such crystals. The recommended intake is 4 ounce a day which is nearly half cup. So, those suffering from kidney stones, don’t worry, have lemon drink every day and see kidney stones dissolving on their way.
5. Fights Bad Breath:
Lemon is one of the best stuff that you can find to fight the problem of bad breath. Lemon fights the bacteria that is responsible for causing bad breath because lemon is incredibly high in vitamin C, and vitamin C will create an acidic environment hard for bacteria to thrive in. Moreover, lemon also activates production of saliva that eliminates the odor-causing bacteria.
Lemon that is easily soluble in water, you can have it in a glass of water in the morning, that will make sure that you don’t have to face the embarrassment of bad breath anywhere throughout the day.
6. Maintains pH Level:
Our body maintains a delicate acid-alkaline balance. But, by eating whatever we see without keeping a check on our acidic intake we keep eating and drinking, this results in misbalancing the pH level of body. One of the biggest pitfalls of not maintaining it is the toll it takes on the body, especially the digestive system, liver, and kidneys.
Now, you must be wondering how lemons could help in this? No doubt lemons are acidic in their natural form, lemon water is alkaline-forming in the body. It is a natural equalizer for body. So, it is suggested that every day you should have lemon water (2 cups of luke warm water with 1/4th of lemon squeezed in it). It will help maintain the pH levels of body, so that all the cells in our body work to their optimum.
7. Maintains Blood Pressure:
If you are suffering from high blood pressure, you will surely be happy to know that lemon is enough to take care of all your blood pressure related issues. Blood pressure usually rises when one is not able to get sleep and has stress in mind. And the high potassium content in lemon helps to combat this situation of insomnia by reducing stress which in turn promotes sleep, calms the mind and helps maintain a healthy blood pressure.
Not just this, lemon when consumed on daily basis as lemon water also cleanses the lymphatic system and keeps it hydrated which is also a contributing factor in maintaining the blood pressure.
8. Weight Management:
Lemon water, is useful for increasing weight loss results when consumed as part of a healthy weight-loss program. A specific chemical in lemons, called polyphenols help to limit increase in body fat. Plus, the potassium in lemon helps in maintaining metabolism and induces the process of digestion. Moreover, the vitamin C content that lemons contain is also helpful for weight loss.
People with lower vitamin C in their tissues don’t burn fat as efficiently during exercise, so it not only reduces fat on its own but also helps fat loss that you might be trying for by exercising or any other physical activity. Overall, I will recommend you to start taking lemon if you are on a weight loss diet.
These eight reasons are surely forcing me at least to grab a glass of lemon water. If not to you then you must know that apart from the above mentioned health benefits lemon is a home cure for many other problems also like it is a known cure for cold and cough, it is proven to be effective in flu, it is a natural de-toxifier; hence a cure for hangovers, it is also known to be an effective cholesterol levels controller, studies have also found that it reduces inflammation in arthritis patients and so on. The list is really big, but I have tried and put the best and proven health benefits of lemon.
So, next time you head for a grocery shop, don’t forget to get lemons to enjoy these benefits. And when benefited I would like you to share these benefits with your family and friends, because as I always say, sharing is caring.
