They say that good things come in small packages — and that’s especially true for the blueberry. This little super-fruit packs a serious punch as an antioxidant powerhouse and a disease fighter, among its many other health benefits. Have you ever tasted a blueberry? Didn’t you like its tangy taste? Most people do, and if you did, then you will like them even more in a few minutes. And those who don’t like it will start loving it once they’ll come to know the health benefits of this small berry.
Fresh blueberries are definitely one of the most popular fruit in summers. They are full of nutrients, and can be eaten freshly picked as well as can be incorporated into a variety of recipes. Now, without wasting much of time we directly move to the health benefits of blueberries, the “Superfruit”:
The high fiber content, highly quantitative antioxidants, and their ability to dissolve the ‘bad cholesterol’ makes blueberries an ideal dietary supplement to cure many heart diseases, while also strengthening the cardiac muscles. Plus, Vitamin B6 and Folate prevent the build-up of a compound known as Homocysteine. When excessive amounts of Homocysteine accumulate in the body, it can damage blood vessels and lead to heart problems.
Blueberries are moderate in sugar when compared to other fruits. The bioactive compounds in blueberries appear to outweigh any negative impact of the sugar when it comes to blood sugar control. While, on the other hand the Anthocyanins in blueberries have beneficial effects on insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. These anti-diabetic effects have been shown with both blueberry juice and extract.
The iron, phosphorous, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc and vitamin K in blueberries all contribute to building and maintaining a good bone structure and also strengthens it. Iron and zinc play crucial roles in maintaining the strength and elasticity of bones and joints. Vitamin K plays the key role in the absorption of calcium. Its deficiency can lead to the loss of calcium resulting in higher risk of bone fracture.
Blueberries are the richest source of antioxidants. When I say biggest it means as compared to any other fruit or vegetable available in the market, blueberries have more number of antioxidants present in them. The more the number of antioxidants, the more would be immunity, as these antioxidants neutralizes the free radicals present in the body due to several reasons such as smoking, pollution etc.
These free radicals if increases beyond a certain limit may cause cancer and destroy immune system completely, but blueberries make sure thet these free radicals are reduced to minimum, hence empowers the immune system. Most of the berry’s antioxidant power comes from Anthocyanin, the pigment responsible for the blue color of the berries.
If your skin has become dull, your face has got wrinkles and fine lines and you look older than your ages then blueberry are made for you only. Even if you don’t have any such problem and want to delay any such problem, then do add blueberry in your diet. Blueberries bring you the brightest ray of hope for staying young. Blueberries are packed with antioxidants and rank number 1 in the world of antioxidants, these antioxidants fight the free radicals, which are the root cause of ageing or early ageing.
Urinary Tract Infection:
Urinary tract infections are generally caused by the formation of colonies by bacteria like E-coli along the lining of the inner walls of urinary tract. As a result of which, whenever urine passes it creates burning sensations and a number of other complications. In such cases, blueberries may act as one shot medicine.
It has a compound formed of large, polymer-like molecules that restricts the growth of such bacteria. It also has properties which add to this effect. These heavy molecules scrub away the bacteria from the walls of the urinary tract, thus helps in preventing the infection.
Blueberry is one such fruit which you may call is an elixir for all those people who have eye related issues, because of which people tend to use spectacles, contact-lenses, eye drops and may even go for eye surgeries. So, you want to know what exactly is there in blueberries which can help so much? Their antioxidant properties helps to fight all age-related ocular problems like macular degeneration, cataracts, myopia & hypermetropia, dryness, and infections, particularly those pertaining to the retina.
Macular degeneration is a serious problem where the retina of the eye degenerates gradually, ultimately leading to complete or partial blindness. So eating blueberries can surely lead you to a healthier vision. Blueberries contain special groups of antioxidants called carotenoids, flavonoids and other antioxidant compounds like vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A, selenium, zinc and phosphorus, which are all very beneficial and essential for ocular health.
Again, the antioxidant properties of blueberries come into play. The anthocyanin, the selenium, the vitamins A, B-complex, C and E, zinc, sodium, potassium, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese and all the others can prevent and heal neurotic disorders by preventing the degeneration and death of neurons. These essential nutrients also protect brain cells and help to restore the health of the central nervous system. They even heal damaged brain cells and neuron tissues to keep your memory sharp for a very long time.
So, to conclude I can say that eat them until your tongue turns blue in order to live a long and healthy life.
And as usual a word of caution : no doubt blueberries comes seasonally so, it’s obvious anybody would love to eat as much as possible, but being super rich in antioxidants, if taken in large amount on regular basis can harm our DNA, so eat it until your tongue turns blue but still, keep a limit.
