New research suggests that the oral health of our mouth depicts the condition of our whole body. For example, when our mouth is healthy, chances are , our overall health is good, too. On the other hand, if we have poor oral health, we may have other health problems.
You might not know this but there is a relationship between gum (periodontal) disease and health complications such as a constipation, stroke or any heart problem. Women with gum disease also show higher incidences of low birth-weight babies or sometimes pre-term birth as well.
Other research (conducted somewhere) shows that more than 90 percent (which is very high) of all systemic diseases (diseases involving many organs or the whole body) have oral manifestations like swollen or bleeding gums, mouth ulcers which are very common, dry mouth and other oral and dental problems.
If we don’t take care of teeth and gums, our poor oral hygiene can actually pass to many other health problems like:
- Oral and facial pain.
This pain can be largely due to infection or damaging of the gums that support the teeth (base for the teeth) and can lead to tooth loss. The roots of the teeth becomes weak when the gums are not able to support them for long.
- Problems with the heart and other major organs.
Mouth or Oral infections i should say can affect many major organs. For example, the heart valves can become inflamed by bacterial endocarditis. This is a very bad condition that affects people with heart disease.
- Digestion problems.
The first step in digestion is the proper chewing of the food. So Digestion begins with physical and chemical processes taking place in the mouth, and problems here can lead to intestinal failure, irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive disorders.
There’s more to keep our pearly whites precisely that than a bit of brushing and the odd visit to a dentist.

Carbonated drinks (including the diet variety and sparkling water ) can cause our teeth to look older than they really are. These drinks are so highly acidic that they can actually dissolve the upper layers of tooth. They contain high amounts of phosphorous – a mineral that can leach calcium from our bones if we consume too much – and some scientists believe that they can weaken our jawbone, increasing the chance of losing teeth.
Foods that work on the teeth like detergents are foods that require chewing. It is found that food like apples, celery and carrots clean teeth naturally and while foods like spinach, lettuce and broccoli prevent staining by creating a natural film on teeth that acts like barrier. Major strainers like tea and coffee will take their toll on our smile sooner or later, so steer clear of tea, coffee, red wine, curries and any kind of highly pigmented foods such as blueberries and cherries – in fact anything, that will stain a white shirt can stain your teeth as well.
Smoking causes staining of teeth and bad breadth and increases the risk of oral cancer and gum disease, as it constricts blood flow to the gums.
Plaque is a sticky layer of material containing bacteria that accumulates on teeth, including where toothbrushes can’t reach. Many of the foods we eat cause the bacteria in our mouth to produce acids. Sugary foods are obvious sources of plaque, but there are many others that we might not realize can cause harm such as starches – such as bread, crackers and cereal. Not only this but they also cause acids to form. You should also know that Plaque can also produces substances that causes irritation to the gums, making them red, sensitive and susceptible to early bleeding. This can lead to gum disease, in which gums pull away from the teeth and form pockets that fill with bacteria and pus. If the gums are not treated, the bone around the teeth can be destroyed and teeth may become loose or have to be removed.
The best way to remove plaque is by brushing and cleaning in between teeth everyday.
- How to Brush your Teeth :- Remember always “Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against the gums”.
- Now you need to move the brush back and forth gently with soft hands in short (tooth-wide) strokes such that you do not hurt the gums.
- Now you need to follow a very simple formula :- Brush the outer tooth surfaces, the inner tooth surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of the teeth which are most common areas of tooth problems and at these locations food get stuck.
- Dentist suggests “Use the tip of the brush in order to clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth in both up and down series, using a gentle up-and-down stroke in a manner like pushing the stuck food outside.
- Always Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and germs and also to freshen your breath after brushing the teeth.
- How to do flossing:-Break off about 18 inches of floss from the bundle and wind it around the middle fingers of each hand very carefully. Hold the floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers so that it does not lose out while applying on the teeth spacing.
- Carefully Guide the floss between your teeth (spacing between teeth) using a gentle but rubbing motion.
- When the floss reaches the gum line, carefully curve it into a C shape against one tooth. Now gently slide it into the space between the gum and the tooth and bring the stuck food out.
- Bring back the floss toward the contact point between the teeth spacing and move the floss up or down on the other side now, conforming the floss to the shape of the tooth.
- Floss should be hold tightly against the tooth. Rubbing the side of the tooth gently, moving the floss away from the gum with up-and-down motions.
- Just repeat this method on the rest of your teeth for cleaner oral health.
Key Note:-The single biggest advancement in oral health has been the use of fluoride, which strengthens enamel, thus making it less likely to decay fast. You will be shocked to know that three out of four Americans drink water that is fluoridated. You can talk to your dental professional, who may suggest putting a fluoride application on your teeth if required. Many toothpastes and mouth rinses also contain fluoride. NOTE :-One should be careful when using fluoride in young children — It should be used in a very small quantity, no more than a pea-sized dab (on the toothbrush), which is sufficient and will do the equivalent function . Too much can cause white spots on teeth which does not look good and reduces the natural shine in your teeth.
