The Myths, Risks, and Benefits of Cosmetic Surgery

Plastic surgery isn’t the taboo topic it once was.  These days, it seems like almost everyone in Hollywood has had some sort of work done, from subtle facial tweaks to full-blown body makeovers.  You may even have friends or family members who have had cosmetic surgery, as many procedures are relatively inexpensive and accessible.

More extreme procedures, like double eyelid surgery and butt implants have become increasingly more common, as these procedures allow you to completely alter the way you look.  For those of us who are unhappy with a particular part of our bodies, cosmetic surgery offers the chance to change those insecurities and create the look we desire.

The Benefits

Getting cosmetic surgery obviously has its benefits, which is why so many people do it!  Some of the biggest benefits of plastic surgery include:

Increased Self-Confidence

This is perhaps the biggest reason many people choose to get plastic surgery, as it allows you to alter certain aspects of your appearance in order to create a more desirable look.  If you’ve always been insecure about your nose, for example, a rhinoplasty or non-surgical nose job can serve as a big confidence booster.  Plastic surgery can also improve the way you look in photographs, and even temporary procedures like botox or fillers can help you look the way you want to look on a big day such as your wedding or other important event.

Improved Physical Health

Plastic surgery isn’t just about vanity- sometimes you may even see an improvement in your physical health as well!  A breast reduction, for example, can help reduce back pain you may be experiencing, leading to a more comfortable and higher quality life.  Other conditions, such as a deviated septum, can be fixed by a nose job that straightens out the nasal passages and makes it easier to breathe.  If you’re experiencing pain that could be fixed with plastic surgery, talk to your doctor and ask if a cosmetic procedure could be right for you.

The Myths

Although plastic surgery is something that is openly talked about these days, there are still many myths and misconceptions surrounding cosmetic procedures.  Some of the most common are:

Only the Rich and Famous Get Plastic Surgery

While this may have been true many years ago, plastic surgery today is accessible to anyone who has the time and money.  From your best friend to your local Starbucks barista, there may be people you interact with on a daily basis who have had plastic surgery that you may not even know about!

Only Women Get Plastic Surgery

Another common misconception is that only women get plastic surgery, when in reality, that couldn’t be further from the truth!  In this day and age, more and more men have been getting plastic surgery in order to change things about themselves they aren’t happy with, including nose jobs, chin augmentations, and Gynecomastia (male breast reduction).

All Plastic Surgery is Permanent

While more invasive procedures like breast augmentation tend to be permanent unless the patient chooses to have them altered again, there are certain procedures that only yield temporary results.  Botox and fillers are perfect examples of this and make great options for anyone looking for a more natural look that they can reverse if they choose to.
