The first thing that comes into my mind when I hear the word spinach is “Popeye” – the cartoon character who use to win in the end by eating a can full of spinach, and I am sure most of you would also have had the same connection with it. In my childhood, I use to think that spinach is really that much magical and would give me muscles and power on the spot as it gives Popeye, but it never did. That was my puerility, but, that doesn’t mean spinach is just a waste, there must be something in it that’s why Popeye use to eat only Spinach and not anything else. Yes, Spinach is that beneficial from every aspect and is the super-food behind that superhero. It may not give you all these effects on the spot, but it is something that gives you more than just health, it is full of nutrients, vitamins and minerals that are not just essential for protecting you from diseases but to make you healthier from just healthy.
Before going any further I would like you to have a look at the treasure of nutrients that this green leafy vegetable holds in it. Spinach contain more nutrients than virtually any other vegetable, it is loaded with all the vitamins in good quantity, namely; vitamins A, vitamin K, vitamin D, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin C and vitamin E. Other nutrients that it is rich in are; magnesium, manganese, potassium, iron, folate, copper, zinc, selenium and calcium. Withstanding all these benefits, I guess now all of you know why spinach is often referred to as “Super-food”. And these seven are not just it, there are innumerable benefits that one can reap from spinach, I have written just seven because these are proven ones and I felt these are the best ones that anybody looks for.
But, the problem with spinach is that many children don’t like the taste of spinach, why to blame just children, many grown-ups also don’t like it much. So for all of them I would like to tell that initially you may not like it, but slowly and steadily you will develop a taste for it and you will start loving it. Or else the easiest way to consume spinach if you can’t eat spinach dish, could be in the form of a salad or you can prepare a smoothie of spinach by adding milk, honey and any seasonal fruit. Just the focus should be to reap the maximum benefits out of spinach by consuming it as much as you can. So, next time you are going to grocery shop, you know what your first priority is.
But, before I wind up, a word of caution – spinach is rich in oxalates, so those who are suffering from kidney diseases should consult their doctors before consuming spinach.
